  293. Jrcomm should be set to 38.4k w/ transfer buffer 16k and 4 colors. It seems
  294. the more the colors the more you are likely to loose characters due to the
  295. 38.4k locked baud rate. INIT STRING should be ATZ. One note 16.8k hst doesnt
  296. seem to be detecting busy signals as fast as the 14.4k it takes 4 busys
  297. instead of the normal two. Hopefully this can be changed!

  421.  the time has showed that most of the sysops can't set their 
  422. modems, why ? dunno.. maybe just to stupid to read the manual, anyway
  423. i get asked several times to give out the settings for my modem and here
  424. it is, you may set your modem like thiz and you will also get callers 
  425. from 2-way overseas, you know what i mean .. or foreign callers like in
  426. my bbs.
  427. this settings are for sysops, but i use them for trading in the states
  428. & many other countries also .. and i get fast transfers !!
  429. my topspeeder here gets over 5500 cps .. with my settings ..have you
  430. ever got this ?? dont think so.. you can use this also for 16.8 hst just
  431. set the command after you fixed everything else

  790. perfect under 38400 BPS with good settings for HST modems AND Config
  791. files for the most used terminal software out there. And NO Setter program
  792. (that i think is BAD cauze I want to KNOW what is changed and what isnt!)
  793. if you dont know how to change your modem settings then sell your HST..

  795. If you have a turbocard then you can just use the settings supplied
  796. you dont need to do any tricks!  but if you have problems with your modem
  797. this text CAN help you out..

  803. but FIRST of all HOW to install the SOFTWARE right for this speed.
  804. (For an Amiga without any turbocard like a 020 or 030 or even 040)
  805.  
  806. If you are running Kickstart 1.3 (1.2) you MUST Copy the Serial.device supplied
  807. to your DEVS: dir (EVEN if your serial.dev is a newer version they still
  808. doesnt work with 38400!) (Remember that you MUST copy the supplied serial.device
  809. or it wont work!) (you can TRY to change after you have tested the supplied
  810. serial.device maybe it works)
  811. The serial.device supplied with WB2.0 is fast enough for 38400 so you dont
  812. have to copy the supplied serial.device..
  813.  
  814. Then load preferences (Kick 2.0 should load prefs for serial!)
  815. Go to the serial menu and set the BAUD rate on 19200 (!) and the buffer
  816. to the HIGHEST AVAIBLE (16Kb on 1.3 and 64Kb on 2.0) and the ABSOLUTLEY
  817. most important thing   turn ON RTS/CTS handshake! do NOT use Xon/Xoff it
  818. is slower then RTS/CTS and not as safe and sometimes can make your
  819. serial-port to STUCK..
  820.  
  821. Now you should save that on disk/hd
  822.  
  823. now load your terminal program.
  824.  
  825. Use a config supplied OR set the program as follows!!
  826.  
  827. RTS/CTS Handshake *MUST* be ON!   If theres a Serial buffer there set it
  828. to MAX! Set to 2 Colors. AND Change the Task priority to something between
  829. 10-32 (Higher Pri=Safer 38400 but slower multitasking!) IF the program
  830. lacks possability of changing Task priority (Like AZComm and VLT) you must
  831. write  ChangeTaskPri <pri> before running the terminal program.
  832. Set your Baudrate to 38400....
  833.  
  834. NOTE:
  835.       Some terminal programs can be used with 8 colors depending on the rest
  836.       of your equipment
  837.  
  838. NOTE2:
  839.       SOME Harddisk controllers does NOT accept a too high task priority
  840.       in some BAD cases not even high enough for 38400...  if the task
  841.       priority is too low you will get many errors in UL/DL
  842.       but if your controller doesnt support high taskpriority you will also
  843.       get lots of errors
  844.  
  845. NODE3:
  846.       Using SOME Slow terminal programs (like JRComm) you MUST have REAL
  847.       Fastmem to sucessfully use 38400.. that means NO intenal memory
  848.  
  849. ok now its time for your modem settings, this is a dump of a non ASL HST ATI4:
  850. (but HST users without V42 Bis should use those settings BUT change the
  851. &K3 to &K0 and the &A3 to &A2 or &A1 depending on how much your HST

  954. When its set to 0 it will give a longer carrier and DS modems will also
  955. check for V32(Bis) connect (V32 modems can ONLY be set to ATB0) having
  956. this to 0 will help overseas callers to get better connects
  957. When set to 1 it connects HST faster BUT the carrier is short so overseas
  958. callers will have BIG problems connecting at HST speed. (V32 is DISABLED)
  959.  
  960. ATCx:
  961. This is a setting IF the transmitter should be on or off!  as we sure will
  962. transmit something it should be on 1
  963.  
  964. ATEx:
  965. When E0 the modem will NOT echo the commands you write to the modem.
  966. When 1 it Echos it back so it's visible for you.
  967.  
  968. ATFx:
  969. This is the same as Ex but this time during CONNECTION. Should be OFF (1)
  970.  
  971. ATMx:
  972. This is how the speaker shold be handeled!  0=Off
  973. 1=on while dailing and until connect 2= Always ON 3= on efter dailing and 
  974. until connect!   It should be 1 or 3 so you know if you come to the right
  975. place.
  976.  
  977. ATQx:
  978. When set to 0 the modem will show you resultcodes like  OK, ERROR etc
  979. When set to 1 it wont show any result codes.
  980.  
  981. ATVx:
  982. When set to 0 it shows resultcodes as numerical codes! (0)
  983. When set to 1 it shows resultcodes as Verbal (OK)
  984.  
  985. ATXx:
  986. What the modem should react to like BUSY, RINGING, DAILTONE Etc
  987. Look at your bottom side of your modem for diagram!

  989. BAUD=38400
  990. The speed between the computer <-> modem  NOT TO THE LINE
  991. (Technical note!   its 38400 BAUD between modem <-> computer but on the
  992. line its about 2400 BAUD... (a 2400 BPS connection is hooked on 600 BAUD
  993. i will NOT explain the difference between BAUD and BPS but its NOT
  994. possible to have a higher speed then 2400 BAUD on a called up line...
  995. so all ads that says 9600/14400/19200 or 38400 BAUD is WRONG its BPS!))
  996.  
  997. DAIL=HUNT
  998. If checks IF your phoneexchanger can handle tuch tones!  if not it will
  999. dail the number using PULSE Dailing. (Poor you if you have to use PULSE)

  1001. AT&Ax:
  1002. What connect messages it should show
  1003. When 1= CONNECT <speed>   2= CONNECT <speed>/ARQ/HST  3=CONNECT
  1004. <speed>/ARQ/HST/HST/V42BIS (If V32 it will show V32 instead of HST)
  1005. Only V42Bisers can have it set to 3 and some HSTs cant have 2 either.
  1006. but this register doesnt change anything in the speed
  1007.  
  1008. AT&Bx:
  1009. How the rate Computer <-> modem should be!
  1010. 0= Follows connect rate
  1011. 1= Fixed
  1012. 2= Fixed on ARQ connects and follow connect rate on NON ARQ
  1013. Fixed rate is the absolutley best to have (in this case fixed to 38400)
  1014.  
  1015. AT&Hx:
  1016. This one is REALLY important as this is the Handshake control of the modem.
  1017. 0= Flow control DISABLED (default of some stupid reason!)
  1018. 1= Hardware control (RTS/CTS)
  1019. 2= Software control (Xon/Xoff)
  1020. 3= Hardware AND Software control
  1021. RTS/CTS is the SAFEST way so it MUST be turned on!
  1022.  
  1023. AT&Kx:
  1024. This is the datacompression.
  1025. 0= No Compression
  1026. 1= MNP 5 Compression (If possible) (V42Bis modems will try to use V42Bis)
  1027. 2= MNP 5 ALWAYS ON (V42Bis modem will TRY to use V42Bis)
  1028. 3= V42Bis Compression
  1029. NON V42Bisers should have set to 0 when transfering UNPACKED files
  1030. (a non V42Bis sysop should ALWAYS have set to 0!) and 1 when transfering
  1031. UNPACKED files!
  1032. V42Bisers should have set to 3 as V42Bis compresses ONLY if it does any
  1033. good.

  1063. isnt that good packed or even UNPACKED you can get up to REALLY STUNNING
  1064. CPS rates. A textfile shouldnt be that impossible to send in a rate of
  1065. about 3000-3840 CPS if you have a FAST HARDDISK (Drives will for sure
  1066. slow things down *VERY* MUCH!)

  1068. BUT Packed files CAN go fast like once when I ULed 4 DMS files and one DOC
  1069. file and got this result (to the BBS Material World in Norway)

  1198. As your computer is fast enough then you dont have to do any tricks with
  1199. HIGH taskpriority.. doing such things will just make your computer slow and
  1200. booring to use... you can multitask perfectly runing 38400 and a taskpriority
  1201. of 0..   if you got an accelerator card theres absolutley NO reason to run
  1202. 19200 BPS also use the supplied program CPUBLIT. Add this in your startup
  1203. sequence:

  1210.                      USING A 16800 DUALSTANDARD MODEM

  1213. When you have a 16800 DualStandard modem and calls a similiar modem you will
  1214. Connect in 14400 V32Bis instead of 16800 BPS HST I still havent found any
  1215. setting so it connects HST before V32 (V32Bis) so the only thing to call
  1216. such BBSes is to simply turn OFF the V32 protocol while calling those BBSes
  1217. you are doing this with:     ATS27=4            
  1218. To turn ON the V32 protocol again just write:   ATS27=0
  1219. I will search for a setting that answers HST before V32 but it seems that
  1220. it doesnt excist.. (Something for US Robotics to try to get fixed?)

  1223.                               USING 57600 BPS
  1224. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------

  1226. If you are a lucky guy as I am having the new 16800 modem and have a
  1227. 68020-68040 processor in your computer you can skip all those tricks of
  1228. getting 38400. you can run with 0 as task priority and use such a high
  1229. speed as 57600 BPS this will improve your speed even MORE..  some 020 and
  1230. slow 030s MAY have to use a higher taskpriority using this high BPS rate..
  1231.  
  1232. please remember that only the NEW US Robotics (the SMALL ones) modems can
  1233. handle a speed of 57600 BPS
  1234.  
  1235. 57600 is IMPOSSIBLE to use with a normal 68000 processor!  ***MAYBE*** it
  1236. will work with Kickstart 2.0 if you have REAL FASTMEM and maybe a 16Mhz
  1237. 68000 but i havent tested it out.
  1238.  
  1239. Also use CPUBlit if your computer is fast.. read information above how to
  1240. use it... (With fast computer i means ATLEAST 25MHz 030 or ANY 040 card)

  1244. Some words about other modemsetters:
  1245.  
  1246. There are MANY modem setters in the world spreaded on BBSes  often are
  1247. those settings BAD and just speed up the DIALING speed actually nothing
  1248. else..
  1249.  
  1250. There are also a thing that you should boot in NTSC and then with
  1251. software flick over to PAL to get higher CPS rates.... ok your
  1252. terminalprogram will show a HIGH rate of about 2000 CPS but the BBS will
  1253. still show you a low rate... this is becauze if you change the screen
  1254. blanking you will also fuck up the clock so one secound is LONGER then its
  1255. actually is so the terminal program can send more chars in one "secound"
  1256. so it shows a FALSE result...    I still havent seen ANY modemsetter or
  1257. similiar who have beaten this series....   unfortunally doesnt sooo many
  1258. use it becauze they have done somthing wrong (like dint care about
  1259. copying the serial.device, changing taskpri or have a bad serial cable)
  1260. and instead use one of the bad modem setters and use 19200  some even turn OFF
  1261. V42Bis datacompression... (MNP 5 should be turned OFF) i sure want more
  1262. BBSes running with 38400 its LOT more fun to connect on a BBS where menus,
  1263. tectfiles and some files just pops up on the screen or HD.. AND doesnt
  1264. slow down for packed files!  sometimes even get even BETTER Xfers
  1265. so Sysops and users PLEASE use 38400... you will get STUNNED when you see
  1266. the result... many of my users have been stunned now its maybe your time?
  1267. (many persons have also called me up and THANKED me for this series and
  1268. thats make me happy!  YOUR WELCOME.. i dont have my settings secret
  1269. cauze i want the HST to really SWEAT and get fast connect whereever i call)

  1271. As some persons HAVE had some trouble i will set up a list of
  1272. problems AND possibly whats wrong:
  1273.  
  1274. WRONG:                     WHAT MAYBE IS WRONG:
  1275.  
  1276. *LOTS* of errors in ULs    the RTS/CTS signal is missing check your
  1277. DLs is ok                  &H1 settings and check if your terminal
  1278.                            program is set on RTS/CTS and in some cases
  1279.                            check that RTS/CTS is turned ON in preferences
  1280.                            if this is ok then maybe your serial-cable
  1281.                            is wrong! pins 1-8 and 20 should be connected
  1282.                            straight over. (Shematics on the bottom side
  1283.                            of your modem)
  1284.                            I know companys (NO NAMES) that sells HST modems
  1285.                            with serial cables that ISNT designed for 
  1286.                            HSTs those cables lacks RTS/CTS (they say you
  1287.                            should use Xon/Xoff (BAD) and dosnt have the
  1288.                            Carrier Detect signal so some terminal programs
  1289.                            or BBS programs thinks the line is dropped when
  1290.                            its not dropped!)
  1291.  
  1292. Errors in UL and DL        Too low serial buffer or too low task priority
  1293.                            (or to HIGH priority for your HD controller)
  1294.                            or wrong (to slow) serial.device
  1295.                            Or you have FAKE Fastmem and no REAL FASTMEM
  1296.                            get some REAL Fastmem
  1297.                            (some GVP controllers without Fastmem will have
  1298.                            problems with fast serial transfers if you dont
  1299.                            have memory installed)
  1300.  
  1301. Loosing chars on the       Too many colors?? try 2 of them!
  1302. Screen but Uls and DLs
  1303. works great
  1304.  
  1305. The same as above BUT     Some Harddrive controllers (Like the ALF)
  1306. with 2 colors             does a stupid check if the HD is there or removed
  1307.                           (the same check as the click on a disk) and this
  1308.                           disturbs the sending.. try changing the priority
  1309.                           of the HD device IF POSSIBLE..
  1310.  
  1311. ULs works ok but errors   It seems that JRComm of the newer versions have
  1312. in DL using JRComm        a SLOWER serial handling so it will not work
  1313.                           with 38400   try to use NComm.
  1314.  
  1315. Error while accessing     It seems that your device (HD, Network, Drive etc)
  1316. any device.               Are too slow  check to download/upload to RAD: or
  1317.                           RAM: and check your settings..
  1318.  
  1319.  
  1320. PS... I read in another info file on how to set the HST that while the modem
  1321.       "blinks" as they call it (when the CS led is black) that the modem was
  1322.       sending in a lower speed then if the CS souldnt "blink"  thats WRONG
  1323.       and is written by a person who dont know anything about modems... the
  1324.       CS is  CLEAR TO SEND and is light when the modem is ready to recive
  1325.       data from the computer  but as the computer sends in 38400 (OR 19200)
  1326.       and the modem sends the stuff to the line in 14400(16800) BPS the modems
  1327.       buffer is full. then CS is out so the computer KNOW that the buffer is
  1328.       full and the modem is working on sending the buffer on the line...
  1329.       If your CS led is "blinking" and you doesnt get errors its just a
  1330.       signal that your modem is correctly set and everything is working fine
  1331.       dont matter if the CS is flashing!   ok the faster the CS is flashing
  1332.       the faster CPS speed  SOMETIMES  sometimes the opposite  then it maybe
  1333.       sends in a LOWER speed then it actually is..  its like if your terminal
  1334.       program was running on 9600 and the modem on 14400 (not possible but
  1335.       but)  so just dont care about that information file written by someone
  1336.       who maybe knows something about 2400 modems.. Still NOONE have made a
  1337.       setting series BETTER then SetHst..  now some BBSes is starting to use
  1338.       it and I notice the difference as Im getting HIGH CPS speeds even to USA
  1339.       (like 1650-1770 CPS from SWEDEN to USA)    So Sysops DO RUN YOUR BBS ON
  1340.       THE SETHST SETTINGS FOR BEST RESULT.. (1920-5760 when running on 16800)
  1341. DS..
  1342.

  1344.     In SetHst4 i thought that i have supplied the wrong config file
  1345.         for JR-Comm  its now checked and all OK..

  1348. Ok now you maybe wonder WHAT different signals etc are made for and WHY they
  1349. are important... so now i will TRY to explain it....

  1351. RD  Recive Data  this led is flashing ONLY when data is transmitted between
  1352.     Modem -> Computer NOT Modem <-> Modem
  1353. SD  Send Data  This led is flashing ONLY when data is transmitted between
  1354.     Computer -> Modem  NOT the line... more about this in RTS/CTS
  1355.     so while SD is out it can STILL send data to the line..
  1356. OH  When the modem have the line...  On Hook ... simple!
  1357. CD  Carrier Detect  theres a connect
  1358. ARQ  When flashing the line is bad and the modem have to resend data!
  1359.      Slows down CPS and CANT be changed in any settings!  MAYBE by using
  1360.      a lower BPS rate...
  1361.  
  1362. RTS/CTS  This is a VERY important handshake for the modem.. now i will
  1363.          explain WHAT it actually does/means
  1364.          When sending data to the modem in 38400 the modem is actually
  1365.          sending in 14400 (16800) to the line but the V42Bis DATACOMPRESSION
  1366.          will TRY to pack the data.. but often it cant pack so it gets up to
  1367.          38400 BPS often it packs just to something between 14400
  1368.          (16800) (NO compression) to 20000 Bps (2000CPS) that means that the
  1369.          modems buffer is quite soon filled  then CTS is low (Clear To Send)
  1370.          so the computer knows that it have to wait to send more data so the
  1371.          modem can send its buffer to the line.. when the buffer is empty CTS
  1372.          is ok again so RTS (Request To Send) signals that the computer can
  1373.          send more data... IF this signal is missing the modems buffer will
  1374.          get filled BUT the computer doesnt know that and STILL sends data in
  1375.          38400 but as the modems buffer is already filled those data will get
  1376.          LOST  that will make so you get LOADS of errors and missing chars
  1377.      There ARE another handshaking too called  Xon/Xoff it works nearly
  1378.      like RTS/CTS BUT its actually CHARS sent over so IF the modem send
  1379.      a special char it HALTS the serial port until another char get
  1380.      transmitted from the other modem.. this can make the serial.device
  1381.      to simply STUCK... so theres no reason to use Xon/Xoff and it
  1382.      also slows down CPS a little...  Xon/Xoff is more used on OLD
  1383.      2400 modems.

  1385. ARQ Problems
  1386.          Many people thinks that ARQ problems can be solved trough changing
  1387.          settings but thats NOT true  the ARQ is a part of the
  1388.          Errorcorrection (MNP 1-4 or V42) and when its out the modem
  1389.          have detected a error and resends the data until it have come
  1390.          over to the other modem 100% correct (BUT if it fails after 16
  1391.          resendings it drops the line)   OK it CAN be corrected by
  1392.          having a LOWER Bps rate.. like 12000 or 9600 Bps... but that
  1393.          effects the maximum CPS rate too...
  1394.          just cauze of the ARQ its IMPOSSIBLE to get errors or similiar
  1395.          effects with a HST modem or ANY other modem with errorcorrection
  1396.          connected to ANY other modem with Errorcorrection (MNP 1-4 and V42)
  1397.          IF you get errors you can be 100% sure something is wrong between
  1398.          SOME  Computer <-> Modem....   IF you get errors on MY bbs you can be
  1399.          99% sure the fault is at YOUR side (if im not multitasking HEAVY
  1400.          while you make your Xfer)

  1402. Comment about some Modem Traders and SYSOPS:
  1403.     When i first released SetHst i thought that i would get SOME
  1404.     questions about HST but i REALLY got surprised that so MANY
  1405.     modemtraders and SYSOPS knew so LITTLE about modems...
  1406.     It seems that only abt 5% CAN READ A MANUAL.... there ARE even
  1407.     people claiming that my SetHst doesnt work when they have set
  1408.     something wrong like a low serialbuffer,, low taskpriority
  1409.     or even running kickstart 1.2 or 1.3 serial device when they
  1410.     MUST use the serial.device supplied in this archive (AS TOLD)
  1411.     if it doesnt work for you then use MY files supplied.
  1412.     I will make DMS files for all tested terminalprograms
  1413.     that IS set for the SetHst so the only thing you have to
  1414.     do is set your HST right...

  1420. Some persons don't know the difference between the different standards
  1421. of highspeed modems so i will write some about them here:

  1423. HST
  1424.      High Speed Technology a high speed protocol (C) by US Robotics
  1425.      that use 14400/450 450/14400 (on some older HSTS 9600/450 9600/300)
  1426.      It sends fastest on the channel who need it most. HST is NOT compaible
  1427.      to V32
  1428.      Now theres even a new HST speed its 16800/450 450/16800 Bps
  1429.  
  1430. V32
  1431.      a CCITT standard for highspeed transfers in 9600/9600  NOT COMPATIBLE
  1432.      with HST
  1433.  
  1434. V32Bis
  1435.      A CCITT standard for highspeed transfers in 14400/14400 NOT
  1436.      COMPATIBLE with the HST Standard
  1437.  
  1438. DualStandard
  1439.      A modem sold by US Robotics (and noone else!  the same as the HST)
  1440.      This modem got BOTH Highspeed standards so it DOES connect in HIGH
  1441.      speed to both V32s and HSTs
  1442.  
  1443. V42
  1444.      A errorcorrection!  IF a HST is V42 compatible it's NOT V32 compatible
  1445.      EVEN if V42 is higher (as V32 is something COMPLETLY different!)
  1446.  
  1447. V42Bis
  1448.      A packing method that is MUCH better then the MNP 5 compression
  1449.      (that ALL HST's have but should be disabled!)  V42Bis compresses
  1450.      BETTER then MNP 5 and compresses ONLY if it is for any use!
  1451.      V42Bis is NOT compatible with V32/V32Bis of the same reason as V42
  1452.  
  1453.    NOTE that MIRACOM HSTs is compatible with HST as its the same company
  1454.  
  1455. If you have a V32 ONLY modem and call a HST the highest rate you will get
  1456. is 2400 BPS with Datacompression (hopefully V42Bis!)
  1457. the same if you call a V32 ONLY with a HST!
  1458.  
  1459. Calling a DualStandard with a HST or V32 will connect in the highest
  1460. possible rate! (16800-9600) in V32 OR HST
  1461.  
  1462. If you are thinking of buying a high speed modem you should buy a HST OR
  1463. DualStandard from US Robotics (as US Robotics are the ONLY copany having
  1464. the HST standard ( (C) by them!)
  1465.  
  1466. v32Bis is faster then HST but most of the BBSes have only HST. for a BBS
  1467. DualStandard is the best thing to have. (well the DS is the best modem
  1468. for called up lines in the world actually)

  1471. There ARE other highspeed standards like the trailblaizer but those
  1472. standards are BOTH EXPENSIVE and bad and not soo used so you will get a
  1473. 2400 connect even if your modem have 9600!

  1475. Theres actually only a standard up to 2400 BPS (600 Baud)
  1476. Errorcorrection like MNP 1-4 and V42 and datacompression MNP 5 and V42Bis
  1477. is a standard so they will be used if you call any brand modem with those
  1478. standards BUT a HST will still get 2400 connection but WITH
  1479. correction/compression...
